  1. 1783-1830. South American nationalist, leader
  2. of revolutionary armies, known as the
  3. Liberator. He fought the Spanish colonial
  4. forces in several uprisings and eventually
  5. liberated his native Venezuela 1821, Colombia
  6. and Ecuador 1822, Peru 1824, and Bolivia (a
  7. new state named after him, formerly Upper
  8. Peru) 1825. Born in Venezuela, Bolivar joined
  9. the nationalists working for Venezuelan
  10. independence, and was sent to Britain in 1810
  11. as the representative of their government.
  12. Forced to flee to Colombia in 1812, he joined
  13. the revolutionaries there, and invaded
  14. Venezuela in 1811. A bloody civil war
  15. followed and in 1814 Bolivar had to withdraw
  16. to Colombia, and eventually to the West
  17. Indies, from where he raided the
  18. Spanish-American coasts. In 1817 he returned
  19. to Venezuela to set up a provisional
  20. government, crossed into Colombia 1819, where
  21. he defeated the Spaniards, and returning to
  22. Angostura proclaimed the republic of
  23. Colombia, consisting of Venezuela, New
  24. Granada (present-day Colombia), and Quito
  25. (Ecuador), with himself as president. The
  26. independence of Venezuela was finally secured
  27. in 1821, and 1822 Bolivar (along with Antonio
  28. Sucre) liberated Ecuador. He was invited to
  29. lead the Peruvian struggle in 1823; and,
  30. final victory having been won by Sucre at
  31. Ayacucho in 1824, he turned his attention to
  32. framing a constitution.
